Introduction to Focus Groups

The Strategic Management Forum operates Focus Groups (Think Tanks). They each look at specific strategic management issues in detail. They will aggregate existing thought leadership, identify research gaps, engage in new research and contribute to the Strategic Management Forum Body of Knowledge and Practice. They also run events internationally (online and off-line). And the outputs are shared with the global community of members.

Membership of the Strategic Management Forum includes Access Focus Groups, or they can be joined by non-members at a price of £75 per group per year.

Reputation

This Focus Group (Think Tank) explores The Strategic Importance of Reputation.

Ask CEOs what is top of their agenda and one the two top issues across all companies and industries are people and reputation. Reputation is the most valuable asset for many companies. It is hard won and easily lost. It can positively or negatively impact on the cost of capital, the cost of doing business and the quality of talent that can be attracted. It impacts on the perceived value of products and services in the eyes of customer and the prices that can be charged for them. No wonder so many businesses invest so much effort in Reputation Management, particularly as reputation is always at risk, and increasingly so. The group will explore the issues in building and managing reputations, and the risks associated with them.

Business Reporting

This Focus Group (Think Tank) explores The Strategic Importance of Business Reporting.

There is some truth to the saying, "what gets measured gets managed", so it is all the more important we know what to measure. But reporting should also include good narratives. It isn't only about the numbers. We also note that for many businesses it is now intangible assets that create the vast majority of their current and future performance. These intangible factors, such as knowledge and intellectual property, are hard to value, and their strategic value is often not understood even within the company. These and many other issues will be explored by the group.

Future of the Board

This Focus Group (Think Tank) explores The Future of the Board from a strategic management perspective.

It is increasingly clear that the the Board as an institution faces considerable challenges given the nature of the changing environment in which businesses operate, and given the often conflicting expectations of many stakeholder groups. This is becoming an acute problem as the expectations are more numerous, increasingly complex and far more challenging. Following the global economic crisis in 2007/8 the crowing criticism of boards intensified and it is now time to consider ways to make them more effective in future.

Innovation

This Focus Group (Think Tank) explores ways to accelerate and improve the innovation process from a strategic management perspective.

As any competitive advantage is increasingly short lived innovation is increasingly an imperative. Despite this many innovations fail, or fail to meet expectations. Innovation also comes in many forms and from many sources. Even when it comes from outside the business the impact can be disrupting and force disruptive transformations on those that are not involved. Add to this the fact that many leading edge technologies impact each other to intensify their impact and and we find ourselves hearing the World Economic Forum predicting that every industry business model will soon be transformed. Some see threats, others see opportunities. The can be either depending on the strategic decisions businesses make.
